Apple will be having patent on Multi-Touch Mac

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

The popular Macintosh and iPod maker, Apple filed a patent application on multi-touch Mac tablet, with a speculation to implement its amazing iPhone technology to the Apple computers, on 3rd January 2007. Actually this particular patent was originally filed by John Elias and Wayne Westerman, the founders of Fingerworks, the company that did much work on touch-interfaces. In 2005, Apple acquired Fingerworks and so the patent is now in hands of Apple.
Elias described much about multi-touch gestures and their actions. The patent application has detailed description to implement the dictionary of gestures which can be segmented down into a combination of thumbs, fingers and/or other portions of the hand. The dictionary of these gestures will be handed over to the users and they may also assign personalized meanings to some particular gestures. 25 combinations of gestures had been described by Elias for any human hand with 5 independent fingers, in his extreme vocabulary of the dictionary. But now they are expecting to analyze over 300 possible combinations of the gestures of human hand.
Apple is already utilizing this technology in its most popular product, iPhone. The product utilizes a multi-touch user interface with a limited number of human hand gestures. Apple is now planning to extend this technology to its iPods and other displays to cover maximum numbers of human hand gestures. A 52-page patent application has been published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday, which is covering many of the similar concepts of the 2006 patent application. The new application is obviously introducing some new interesting techniques.
This patent is promising to control almost every actions including scrolling, rotating, zooming, panning, enlarging, paging, inertia, zooming targets, keyboarding and wheeling, with both floating controls and messages. Jonathan Paul Ive, the senior VP of industrial design of Apple, has also been listed in the list of inventors. Paul is renowned for being the principal designer of several Apple’s successful products like iPod, iPhone, iMac, the Aluminum PowerPook G4 and the MacBook Pro.
Through that patent application, Apple didn’t mean any particular product. Apple even has deprived to discuss proper roadmaps also. Something more is cooking in Apple labs which they may be forwarding time to time. Oppenheimer though didn’t clear what Apple is presently working on, but promised it to be the “state of the art” and unique.
Like many other supporter of Apple’s table PC, TheStreet.com’s Gary Krakow thinks it to be based on the overwhelming technology of Apple’s popular iPhone touch screen. Though MacRumors suggested the device to be a 12-inch or 13-inch Mac tablet and expected to be in the markets by September or October, it is still wait and watch mode for people around the globe.

Google-Yahoo! Online search ad Deal in progress

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

The two Web giants, Google and Yahoo!, have raised a storm in the coffee cup of the government officials. But despite of several scrutinies, the two Companies are reported to be on the course of action. The Web leaders are planning an online search ad partnership which will be ending every other competition in this field, around the Internet. Google when faced a U.S. Justice Department for this search-advertising partnership with Yahoo, reported to proceed with their stated agreement by October.

It is reported that the employees of Microsoft, Yahoo! and Google informed US politicians about the prospective of this anti-competitive Yahoo!-Google advertisement partnership. Michael Callahan, lawyer of Yahoo!, joked on this matter in a funny way. But Brad Smith, Microsoft solicitor, describes themselves to have the potential to fight and win against Google. This partnership deal between Yahoo! and Google was explained to the US Congress to be a situation where Google gets total control over the search system, which is again the key to the Internet.

In another words, the Microsoft-Yahoo! deal was explained to be more rational to the Web. “We are going to move forward,” Eric Schmidt, CEO at Google said in the exclusive interview with Bloomberg Television at Denver on Thursday. Schmidt complains that the Government is not yet clear to them as how they will be dealing with Google and by this time they are progressing toward their dealings with Yahoo!
Presently Google is behind more than 60 percent of search requests over the internet search market. While Yahoo is serving 16.6 percent of the global search queries. The Security and Exchange Commission took a look at the payment plan for Yahoo! Google has been found compensating the advertising revenue of an undisclosed percentage each month. The split in revenue being unclear, the filing also describes the possibility of Google cancelling the deal when the gross revenue for consecutive four months remains below $83 million.
Google acquiring too much of power has raised a hot discussion in the $65 billion online advertising market. The U.S. Justice Department has launched the formal antitrust investigation during this year which wants a close look to this deal. Besides this about more than a dozen states’ attorneys general who got to know the partnership agreement, have opened an inquiry for this deal.
Microsoft not being happy with this, has brought the consumer privacy issue, in addition to everything. Microsoft put a warning for the web that these two web giants will pool immense consumer data and may profile millions of users easily. To counter this, Yahoo has announced that the Company cares for User Privacy and will provide users the choice of their behavioural targeting for the Web sites it owns. On this Google has been clam and easy, explaining that they always worry a little bit. They are now strong believers of their arguments for this deal and Schmidt was found so reluctant to Bloomberg.

Intel patronizing Web TV

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

The world’s largest computer chip manufacturer is now stimulating the market for Web TV. Web TV is now not a very new concept, but has been implemented ago and hasn’t generated very high consumer traction. Intel Corporation is now backing the concept of Internet enabled Televisions, rather than only manufacturing microprocessors. The company has been reached the acme of computer chips and now inventing chips for other mini purposes also to add more thrills to their profile.
The Santa Clara based company is heard to be in partnership with the second web giant Yahoo, to enable Internet features into the televisions. For this purpose Intel will be developing mini computer programs which they are calling as Widgets. By this time Intel’s new Centrino 2 chip renders high-definition video and sound outputs.
Heather Dixon, Intel spokeswoman, revealed the fact that the company has helped much in the making of a Television series named Gemini Division, starring Rosario Dawson. This will be the first television production which will be made for the Internet.
In a way Intel is betting on this concept with a strong belief that consumers need a non-customary device for accessing the Internet. The company is now focussing more on mobile internet devices i.e. MIDS rather than the only prevailing computer chips. Intel is now a part of developing the standards for those devices, which has been proved by their recently introduced chip called Atom, The Atom chip had been made in Chandler.
Presently Intel Corporation is playing an active roll in developing the market for this new product. Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts Co., a semiconductor-industry research firm from Tempe understand and confirms these thoughts. Strauss commented further that Intel is trying hardly to get into the cell phones. It is noticed that the Company has already spent $5 billion over the last 6 years to produce chips designed specially to incorporate communications features on cell phones. The company stopped a giant effort for 2006 and the business was sold to a technology company known as Marvell Technology Group.
Now Intel is trying to be back in the business of cell phones. But this time Intel is now powered by Internet chips rather than those communications processors. Intel is now providing more resources and efforts to the concepts of WiMax and Web TV. Though there are some WiMax networks in the U.S. which are serving the remote rural areas, they are not featured with traditional communication services.
Earlier Intel decided to invest in a Sprint/Clearwire venture, an amount of $2 billion for a national wireless network which will be based on the WiMax systems. It seems that Intel is now determined to instantiate the age-old concept of Web TV very soon.

Is IE8 a solution to the problem?

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

After the release of beta 2 of Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft has promised its users and developers a new and interesting experience of Internet browsing. You can now test the added security feature of IE 8 and its special functions which are designed to deliver web content more useably.
Since the browser is new and it is from Microsoft, so everyone is suspecting its compatibility and sustainability. The browser is also suspected to be useful for visitor tracking systems and other add-ons. It may come up with many headaches for webmasters to track their site usage and other statistics.
Unlike IE6, IE8 is being said to be more supportive to web standards, and expected to resolve codes more rationally. Previously this had been a major issue for developers with the previous versions of IE. This is certainly a good move by Microsoft, but it is another fact that web pages which are much optimised for IE6 and IE7 may not perform consistently well in the new version. Though it is said to be most compatible browser with web resolution factors, it is still to be verified.
Microsoft is also promising its users that web pages optimized for the previous versions of IE, will display well in this new version. I don’t know how this can be possible, while resolving issues with older versions, to understand previous versions. Depicting it to be the most web standards-compliant browser, the software giant is clarifying IE8 not to be compatible for many websites.
Microsoft decided to render the compatibility problems to the end users. They explained a Compatibility View button which switches the compatibility mode of the browser to that of IE6 or IE7. So if your users want, they can carry on viewing your site in older versions. Now this being a feature also indicates that Microsoft will never be able to erase their famous name for browser incompatibility. Since I wonder how much of the users will be interested in switching the compatibility of their browsers as they get any problem with the site. Don’t you think that they will prefer to have a more compatible browser, than a switching machine?
The new privacy standards in IE8 again are going to have many problems for the webmasters with security programs. As the new security features disables many easy browser attacks, also deactivates many security enhancements. So this so called feature of IE8 is going to be a double-edged sword.
This new version has now implemented an ‘InPrivate’ mode concept which will prevent cookies, history and other data from being saved in the browser, deactivating your trace to the sites you visit. So if you are accessing some important information from outside, be sure to be on the InPrivate mode on IE8. When you are in InPrivate mode, your sent information is not shared with third-party web sites without your permission.
So let’s see how much percentage of web users it is going to get in its name. But users still should be aware of the browser they are using, on whatever sites they are.

Overselling in Web Hosting

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Overselling is a business policy used in many industries today to create a situation, where a company provides a service which they know that they will be unsustainable to provide, if every customer uses the service up to the full extent that is advertised for the service. Overselling in Web Hosting industry is generally referred to the overselling of web space and allowed bandwidth usage.

In the web hosting industry, overselling describes the situation, which appears when the company oversells its services. For example, if the web host has a bandwidth of 20,000 GB allowed per month but the host sells 100 hosting packages with 1,000 GB allowed bandwidth per month for data transfer, then the web host is overselling its services. Since the sales they made totals to 100,0000 GB of monthly bandwidth which the company don’t bear itself and thus can’t provide if every user uses it up to the full extend. For sure, the web hosts hope that the customers will not be using the total bandwidth offered.

But if your web host doesn’t calculate this overselling process then either the web host will need to pay the overage cost or they will have to go into debt. This results in suspension of their service offerings and accidentally your website goes offline. The ultimate end can go wrong up to that situation when your web host goes out of the business along with your pre-payment of one year service offering.
So from now whenever you are going after a web host you should look after some things and keep them in mind while judging its reliability:
1.    You should get exactly what you are paying for. This means you are not getting less than other hosts, as well as not much much more than others.
2.    Multiple support options should be provided by the web hosts.
3.    Know well about the web host and find out since when the company is in this business.
4.    The web hosts own site is a remarkable factor which should be noticed well to find out how it is performing. If the hosts’ own sites go slow or often goes offline, then its a pure indication that your site will also go down many times.

Overselling is a kind of marketing strategy which companies are bound to do for profit. From the previous example you can get that not all sites will be able to use up 1,000 GB of monthly data transfer bandwidth. So if the web host provides its servers keeping the advertised bandwidth for everyone, then the company will waste their bandwidth and will need unnecessary number of servers to meet the number of customers.

Overselling is also done in several industries to prevent the loss due to cancellation by customers at the last moments before the selling closes. This helps the service providers to use their service providing capacity almost up to the extend as much as they can offer. Non-Overselling service providers many times suffers loss due to unavailability of sufficient customers with respect to their capability. This problem is somewhat solved through this technique of service overselling. Thus, when utilized in a properly estimated process, Overselling in web hosting industry can be profitable to the web hosts as well as non-annoying to its customers.

Internet shopping rise by 38%

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Shopping though Internet has now became a passion for people around the world. Customers today know to appreciate services which brings convenience to them and avoids all the hassles of leg work. Consumers now can easily choose among thousands of products offered by thousands of stores around the world, which adds to the value of choice and quality. According to study reports, United Kingdom online shoppers spend about 17 pence online on every pound.

According to the e-commerce group IMRG and consultancy of Capgemini, the total amount spent on Internet was £26.5bn which is 38% more than that of the last year.  The clothes and footwear industries were found to be the biggest losers among the physical stores in the month of June and had sales either flat or lower than that of the last year. Online stores were the big winners, said James Roper, chief executive at IMRG.  The rising prices of food and fuel and the credit crunch, forced customers to seek out some other options of compensation. It has now been calculated that the online sales have already reached about 20% of the total retail sales. Online shopping through cyberspace has now became much more popular than physical retail shopping as consumers are now more cautious about what they spend and what hassles they undergo.

According to Mike Petevinos, Capgemini UK, “Convenience has a sharper edge in a world of soaring fuel prices”. The research study found that online clothing sales rose about 32%, lingerie sales rose about 37% and the footwear sales rose up to 38%. In total, as per the report, about £1.76bn was spent online on clothing in the first 6 months of 2008. The online clothing sales had a record amount spent during the March. People are now more getting addicted to convenience and usability of the features which are provided by the online stores. Everyone loves to shop while resting the bed in the air conditioned room.

As Mr. Gartner reported previously that Apple has now became the fastest growing computer manufacturer in the US and its sales has grown up to 38%. Apple now has 8.5% of the US market. It has been seen a great indentation towards the online market, both in hardware and software. People are gradually creating an immense interest on the Internet and its convenient features, which are becoming more interactive and works just out of the box.

The online shopping trend has shown IT and electronic goods to be the most popular products among the customers, which is closely followed by books and clothing. The online shopping trend has now became an unavoidable part of the UK and US retail. The total online retail spend in the year of 2007 worth £14.7bn which is up by 35% from previous year.

Another contributing factor for the increase in online shopping is the increase in number of Internet users to 33.1 million and the increase of online shoppers by 24.7% to 22.6m. Another trend that came out among the online shoppers, which helped the increase in online shopping is that the online customers are much more regular in purchasing (an average of 16.9 times a year) and don’t hesitate to buy products sometimes beyond their financial capacity, availing their credit cards. So the world is going to see much more economic and social effects of the dotcom industries.
